How to Get to/around/away

 

By Bus: to the Garfagnana (1 ½ hours; 8 services daily), to Florence ( 1 ½ hours; services every hour), to/from Pisa (45 minutes; services every hour), to/from La Spezia ( 3 hours, 4 services daily), to/from Marina di Carrara (2 hours; 6 services daily). SITA and CLAP service Lucca and other towns. Tickets have to be purchased at the bus terminal and validated in the bus.
It is possible to take an electric bus linking the railway station, Corso Garibaldi and Piazzale Verdi.
From outside the airport of Pisa there is a bus (50 minutes) leading to Piazzale Verdi across pretty scenery. The tickets have to be purchased at the ticket booth (€4) at the arrivals hall in the airport.

By Car: To head for the Gargfagnana drive along the SS445. Along the A1 westwards you will reach Pisa and Viareggio and eastwards is Florence.
If you are visiting or staying in Lucca in general hotels can reserve lots in the car-parks outside the walls as non residents’ cars are banned in the inside.
The best way to explore Lucca is by bike or foot. To rent a bicycle there are some rental points off the northern gate, Porta Santa Maria, and off Porta San Pietro.
The car parks are located outside the walls, the biggest ones are on the northern and southern side and there are a couple of them inside.
 
By Train: The railway station is near the walls on the outside. To/from Pisa ( 25 min), to/from Florence ( 1 ½ hours ), to Pistoia ( 45 min), to Prato ( 1 hour).

For €1.50 per hour it is possible to rent lockers that the tourist information office off the railway station offers.
 

By Bicycle: due to car restrictions and how little Lucca is bicycles are great to move around. Bicycles, tandems, covered buggies and one-wheel children bicycle can be rented in different agencies in town. Among them are Poli (tel. 0583 49 37 87, Piazza Santa Maria), Cicli Bizzarri (tel. 0583 49 60 31 8, Piazza Santa Maria) and the tourist information office ( Piazzale Verdi).

 

By plane: Pisa railway station is next to the two-terminaled international airport of Pisa which is operated by airlines linking most large towns. A train journey takes 20 minutes to reach Lucca. Most major car rental agencies have their offices in the Car Rentals Terminal linked to the Airport by a shuttle bus service whose stop is outside the arrivals area.
